BIS Principal's Newsletter 9th February 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The first half term of 2018 is coming to a close this week. Thank you all for supporting the school across the year so far and working with us in implementing changes here at BIS.

We wish you all a restful break next week and look forward to seeing and working with you next half term.

End of Term Arrangements

Thursday 8 February 2018 is mufti / non-uniform day. Students can attend school in non-uniform for a charity donation fee of N500. Interim progress reports will be given to students in years 7, 8, 9 and 10 on Thursday. Please ask your child for this hard copy. These reports will also be emailed to you. Thursday is the last formal day of school for this half term for years 7, 8 and 9, as well as year 10S who did not sit mock exams.

Friday 9 February 2018 is the last formal day of school for this half term and is a parent-teacher conference day for those in years 10, 11 and 12 who sat mock exams. Parents are encouraged to attend the conference day with their child as the focus will be on how to work with them through the build up to the May to June exam period. Non-attending parents will be followed up by form tutors and Mrs Nwoha at the beginning of next half term.

Please can I remind all parents that this teacher-parent conference day is for primarily for parents of years 11 and 12 and parents of year 10 English and Additional Maths. Parents of years 7, 8 and 9 are welcome to come into school to collect the interim progress report if not received by hand but we ask you, kindly, not to meet with teachers on this day.

All parents are welcome to make appointments with subject teachers if they wish to discuss an issue.

Punctuality to School and Late Detentions.

Thank you very much parents in helping us become a more punctual school.

Congratulations go to 7V for receiving the first monthly attendance Tutor Group Certificate. They collectively scored the highest attendance for the month of January 2018.

Needless to saythe daily detention cycle will continue. Each latecomer's parent will receive a phone call from the school informing them their child will be in late detention. Any student who is due to attend an extra-curricular club must attend the detention and not the club.

Reasons for lateness are still dominated by 'traffic' - this is the nature of roads in Lagos and therefore must be planned for. So please add 15 to 20 minutes to your journey time if your child has arrived late to school. Sibling drop offs to school are still an issue, with some exam year students arriving late. If you are a parents of one of our frequent flyers, you will receive a phone call this week asking you to attend an interview at the school.

I ask you all, parents and guardians, to make sure each and every BIS student is at school on time in the future. Please help us safeguard your child here at school - if they are not registered, the fire and evacuation procedures will not be securely and effectively met.

Authorised and Unauthorised Absences.

We have introduced a standardised British School registration coding and reporting system. As a COBIS school, we are required to monitor authorised and unauthorised absence as well as reasons for absence and lateness.

We will continue monitoring reasons behind every absence from school - with absences being given a code for either authorised absence or unauthorised absence.

Authorised absences will be those where the student is sick and the parent has provided a note/email to the registrar or tutor explaining the illness.  Medical appointments are not 'sick' appointments and include any planned appointment with a doctor, dentist, hospital etc.. We ask for documentation for proof of these appointments in advance of the medical absence.

Unauthorised absence will be any absence where the school does not receive documentation or a note/email explaining the absence from the parent. Holidays are classified as unauthorised absence unless approved by the Senior Leadership Team at least half a term in advance of the holiday leave.

Home Study Materials for Students Absent from School.

We will happily set home based work for students who are on long term medical leave. However we will not be setting work if a student is off school for a short term illness (in order to allow them to recover and recuperate), if the absence is unauthorised and if the student is taken out of school for a holiday.

IGCSE, AS and A-level examination entry.

You will be receiving exam entry invoices with payment due dates. If you do not receive an invoice you must contact the school accounts department who may ask you to attend an appointment here at the school.

Entries for students have now been made. There are a few not yet returned to us from parents and a few outstanding fees. Please be reminded that we cannot enter where fees are outstanding until the fees are paid in full. Late entries or late changes of entries will be subject to a higher fee, as laid out by the exam board.

PLEASE NOTE: these entry submission timelines and the deadline are set by The British Council and the CIE exam board NOT by the school.

There will be an extra email out to parents of exam entry students and will cover how to help your child prepare for the exam period.

School Fee Payment.

We ask all parents to adhere to the school policy on fee payment. Late payment of fees impairs the School's ability to honour its financial commitments and ensure that your child receives quality education. Thank you to all of you who have already submitted your fees. We are now following up outstanding fees. Any boarding students owing fees will not be allowed to return to the boarding houses after the mid-term break until fees are paid.

Please contact the accounts department if you wish to talk with us about problems with school fee payment.

Parent Appointments with the Principal and the Senior Leadership Team.

If you wish to meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team, please ring the Principals PA on 0908 701 4833 to book an appointment. You will be asked for a meeting focus (a reason for the meeting) and your child's name and tutor group. The reason and focus of the meeting is not the actual detail of a future discussion but a focus area such as Teaching and Learning, Bullying or Behaviour Issues. We will always require the focus to be given. Your appointment will be booked into the member of the leadership team's diary who is best placed to deal with that issue (see table below). Please do not expect to be immediately placed into the Principal's appointment diary. All meetings will be recorded, all meetings will have clear actions for follow up and be acted upon within 7 working days.
