BIS Principal's Newsletter 19th January 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It has been a busy week this week with the mock exams taking place. Years 10 and 12 resume with normal lessons on Monday 22 January 2018, with year 11 mock exams completing by Wednesday. This weekend we have an entrance exam day for prospective parents to BIS, if you know anyone who is considering BIS as their school of choice, please encourage them to come along at 8:30am Saturday 20 January 2018.

Punctuality to School and Late Detentions.

The good start this term has continued with late detentions taking place each night of the week. The lateness of our latecomers is becoming less late! This means that lateness after 8:15am is rare - still not good but rare. Thank you very much parents in helping us become a more punctual school. Needless to say the daily detention cycle will continue. Each latecomer's parent will receive a phone call from the school informing them their child will be in late detention. Any student who is due to attend an extra-curricular club must attend the detention and not the club.

Reasons for lateness are still dominated by 'traffic' - this is the nature of roads in Lagos and therefore must be planned for. So please add 15 to 20 minutes to your journey time if your child has arrived late to school. Sibling drop offs to school are still an issue, with some exam year students arriving late. If you are a parents of one of our frequent flyers, you may receive a phone call this week asking you to attend an interview at the school.

I ask you all, parents and guardians, to make sure each and every BIS student is at school on time in the future. Please help us safeguard your child here at school - if they are not registered, the fire and evacuation procedures will not be securely and effectively met.

Mock examinations for Years 11 and 12.

Year 12 students will resume lessons on Monday 22nd January and Year 11 students will return to class from Wednesday 24th January.

School Fee Payment.

We ask all parents to adhere to the school policy on fee payment. Late payment of fees impairs the School's ability to honour its financial commitments and ensure that your child receives quality education. All non-payers will be followed up from Monday 22 January 2018. Thank you to all of you who have already submitted your fees.

Parents of year 11 students, please note that we are only able to enter your child for their IGCSE subjects if fees are up to date.  Exam entries will be submitted to the exam board in the UK during early February 2018.

Football Team Training.

2:40pm, every Tuesday: football team training for boys and girls from 7 and 8.

2:40pm, every Wednesday: football team training for boys and girls from year 9.

Please note that this training is only for the football team squad members.

After school Co-curricular Sporting Activities.

The PE department are responsible for promoting different sports in both the PE curriculum and in the co-curricular weekly activities. This term, the co-curricular activity choice is focusing on: Rugby, Tag Rugby, Tennis and Volleyball. This will enable BIS to grow teams that can enter into a variety of competitions with other schools across Lagos.

Business Education Department.

The educational visit to Amsterdam, Netherlands is planned to take place in the term break of March 2018 (leaving: 24th, returning 31st March). The visit is for students of years 10, 11 and 12. The maximum number of places is 30 and these are filling up fast. If you or your child is interested in joining the group to Amsterdam and would therefore like to secure on of the few remaining places, please show your interest to the accounts office by submitting the non-refundable fee of £900.00 on or before 31 January 2018 deadline.

Student Leadership Training.

Year 10 students will have the opportunity to attend and complete a 6 day Leadership Training here at the school. The course will cover, but not be limited to, the development of personal skills, communication and team work for leadership. The 6 days will be divided between 3 weekends, the dates of which have yet to be confirmed. After canvassing the students themselves this week there is clear interest from them in this course. If you would like more information about this upcoming event for year 10 students, please contact Mr Akinrinade via his email

Parent Appointments with the Principal and the Senior Leadership Team.

If you wish to meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team, please ring the Principals PA on 0908 701 4833 to book an appointment. You will be asked for a meeting focus (a reason for the meeting) and your child's name and tutor group. The reason and focus of the meeting is not the actual detail of a future discussion but a focus area such as Teaching and Learning, Bullying or Behavior Issues. We will always require the focus to be given. Your appointment will be booked into the member of the leadership team's diary who is best placed to deal with that issue (see table below). Please do not expect to be immediately placed into the Principal's appointment diary. All meetings will be recorded, all meetings will have clear actions for follow up and be acted upon within 7 working days.
