BIS Principal's Newsletter 8th February 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Firstly I would like to thank and congratulate our PTA Executive Committee for organising a wonderful health forum afternoon on Wednesday of last week. It was an excellent occasion with many thought provoking presentations, not least on mental health and psychological wellbeing. We intend to hold a further session on this topic later in the term and it is an area which we must take into consideration in terms of long term planning.

Formal Dinner

The PTA will be organising their annual formal dinner later this term. It is always a very popular event and will take place on the evening of Saturday March 4th. The cost of tickets is 7,500 Naira and students wishing to attend must buy their tickets by no later than Friday 17th February.

Entrance Examinations

Last Saturday saw a very successful entrance examination session for prospective Year 7 students. The final session for this year will be on Saturday 18th March.

Continued Sporting Success

We are delighted to announce that our swimming team won second place at a gala hosted at the Ikoyi Club last Saturday. Congratulations to all involved and our ever supportive parents.

We are also pleased to announce that our basketball team attended an AISEN competition last Saturday and won their group round. They are now set for the quarter finals. We wish them well.

NCUK Event

As you know we began our NCUK Foundation Programme when we opened our Sixth Form earlier this year. Next Monday afternoon (13th February) we will be holding an information afternoon at which representatives from the NCUK organisation as well as leading UK universities will be present. It will run in New Horizons from 2.00 pm until 4.00 pm and will be compulsory for students in Years 10 and 11 as much useful information about university application and university life will be given. A number of guest schools will be attending and BIS parents are equally welcome.

University Visits

The universities of Birmingham and Cardiff will be visiting BIS on Thursday of next week (16th February). They will be presenting to interested parents and students in the Library at 2.45.

Staff Leavers

I am sorry to announce that Mrs Lucy Arole, our Registrar will be leaving us at the end of this half term. Lucy is moving on to the UK where she will be the Admissions Manager at Gresham's School, Holt, Norfolk, which is a highly prestigious independent school.  Lucy has done a marvellous job since she arrived in 2011 and is known to both prospective and current parents for her friendly approach and administrative efficiency. She has also produced the school yearbook and coached netball as well as founding our staff 'Fit Club' which meets each week. We wish her well in her new role and thank her for all she has done here.

Our Vice Principal, Mr Okosodo, will also be leaving us for pastures new at the end of the current academic year. We will pay full tribute at that time for all that he has accomplished since 2005, but there is no doubt that he will be greatly missed.

With best wishes for a pleasant week,

Yours sincerely,

Howard Bullock.
